Chris Roe – Creative, Art & Animation Director

Chris Roe is a BAFTA-nominated Art Director, Creative Director and Animation Director based in West Sussex, UK, and the creator of Clay Jam.

I design original worlds, find ways to build them, and lead the teams that bring them to life. For over 20 years I've combined physical sets, puppets and handmade materials with CG and real-time production across games, TV and film.

This website is Chris Roe’s Creativity Kingdom: an interactive clay theme park where every ride is one of his projects.

Clay Jam

Creator & original Art Director – Fat Pebble · 2011–2016

I created the concept, the characters and the handmade world of Clay Jam, a ridiculously happy mobile game where every creature, prop and hillside is real, squishy plasticine, photographed and brought into the game.

As a founder of Fat Pebble, a 24-person studio, I led its art and animation department of eight and set the visual rules everyone built to, so every new creature felt like it came from the same hands. The game was nominated in the Family category at the 2013 BAFTA Games Awards and has reached more than 10 million players.

Now at YumYumYukYuk, I’m creating the world for Clay Jam 2, currently in production.

“Full of character and colour.”

Pocket Gamer

“An incredible artistic and technical achievement.”

Modojo

“Every lovingly-molded inch of Clay Jam is an uncanny delight.”

Kotaku

“Clay Jam is a blast to play for kids and kids at heart.”

Play-Doh Jam for Hasbro

In 2015 Hasbro asked us to bring Clay Jam into the world of Play-Doh. I directed a small team to create Play-Doh Jam, a new version of the game for the App Store and Google Play, with characters, props and landscapes sculpted by hand from real Play-Doh and photographed into the game.

The job was to make it unmistakably Play-Doh while keeping the handmade charm that made Clay Jam special: the brand’s bright signature colours, its soft, squashy shapes and its spirit of play in every creature and hillside, so the game sat naturally within one of the world’s best-known toy brands.

Famous characters, made in clay

Clay Jam’s look also caught the eye of other big names, and we were approached to make claymation games for SpongeBob SquarePants and Angry Birds. For each, I created clay visuals that turned much-loved characters into something hand-made and fun while staying true to every nuance fans know by heart: their proportions, expressions, colours and the small details that make them who they are.

Marvellous Makes & Lab

Creator, Director & Producer – Super Strange Studios · 2016–2024

Marvellous Makes brings to life the joy of making things with plasticine and simple household objects. It isn’t about making things perfectly; it’s about getting creative and having a go.

Its spin-off, Marvellous Makes Lab, turns everyday objects into experiments you can do at home, from an air cannon to a lava lamp to a paper helicopter that really flies.

I created and produced all 92 episodes, built the physical sets, sourced the props and directed the lighting, leading a team of five artists and animators.

Creature Box

World creator & Art Director – Fat Pebble

A handmade game about matchboxes that open onto fantastical miniature worlds, each one built by hand and brought to life with stop-motion.

I created the world and directed eight artists in building and animating its characters and environments. The game is unreleased, but the miniature world, finished animation and development work stand on their own.

Strike

Assistant Director, Camera & Lighting, Animation Supervisor – Giggle Fish · 2017–2018

A fast-paced, low-budget stop-motion feature where I combined creative leadership with hands-on making: miniature buildings, interior and exterior sets, character models, moulds for silicone puppets, and lighting and camera set-ups.

The budget meant constantly finding inventive ways to get a shot using practical and CG techniques. I also assembled a post-production team of around ten and worked directly on editing, post and visual effects.

Chaos Castle

Creator & Creative Director – Super Strange Studios

A wobbly clay castle on a rock in the sea, wrapped in a rollercoaster slide and home to a gang of gloriously odd residents. It sits at the heart of this park because it’s the purest version of what I love making: a place you want to climb into.

I developed Chaos Castle as original television and interactive game IP, designing the characters, the world and the pitch materials to carry it across play, watch and create. The project was not commissioned.

Sky Kids Christmas

Director & Producer – Super Strange Studios

A run of festive interstitials for Sky Kids, set in a snowy clay village with a plasticine Santa, a snowman and a gingerbread friend.

Wattle Weasels

Writer, Director & Producer – Short film

A short film about the turbulent love life of the rare wattle weasel, made with a single puppet shot many times with interchangeable wattles, beaks and legs.

I motion tracked the live-action puppet footage and added expressive CG eyes, the same practical-plus-digital approach I used on a freelance Siemens film.

Hello, I’m Chris

Creative, Art & Animation Director – West Sussex, UK

I’m Chris Roe, an art and animation director who designs original worlds, finds ways to build them, and leads the teams that bring them to life. My work spans games, television and film, combining physical sets, puppets and handmade materials with CG and real-time interactive production.

I’ve loved theme parks all my life: the way scenery, characters, lighting, sound and effects combine to make a world feel convincing. That’s what I chase on every project, with a clear vision carried faithfully by every team that touches it.

I’m a calm, approachable creative lead who likes setting a clear direction, listening to specialists and giving feedback that helps people do their best work. Running studios has also taught me to plan, schedule and cost creative work.
